about

Does the world want legends? Have our attempts to illuminate every inch of ambiguity left us wanting for some greater mystery? Our imaginations gave form to the mountains and trees bathed in moonlight. The great shapes that hid once in the darkness beyond our little fire became our heroes. Was it the brightness of rationality and modernity that banished them into memory, or did that light, cast even deeper shadows?

One such banished legend is fabled cowboy. Regardless of the historicity of such a figure, it has become mold for many to pour themselves into. But is there any genuine consensus on the character of this universal symbol? While it is certainly a masculine figure who embodies self-reliance and a connection with nature, the creeping influences of civilization and ideology have poisoned our understanding of this figure. How can something embody both a separation from civilization and yet also the reach of its laws and authority? How can a jailer and lawman be a symbol of freedom? How can a gun-toting killer of countless creatures and men be at one with nature? How does one become a man when they are cursed to forever measure themselves against an impossible and grotesque ideal?

The image of these men that we have projected on to the past is a contradiction that this album hopes to give voice to. It is a man between worlds and between ideals.
